This is a great pocket trumpet ! excellent quality, and a vast improvement on a previous (small bell) pocket I previously had (from another manufacturer). I've been playing this JP159 for about a year now so have a pretty good handle on how it plays, As others have said elsewhere on the internet, you should really oil the pistons before use initially, but then again.... you should do so on any new instrument: That said the Monel valves are as smooth as my full size Vincent Bach and just as easy to play. you may need to adjust your hands to find a comfortable holding position but its not a problem and the lightish weight is a massive bonus !

So.... the valve action is as good as any decent trumpet, and the full size bell gives you the chance to use any of your standard mutes without any issues ! I use a plastic hush hush emo mute as it reduces the tinny\metallic sounds of a standard mute and drops the decibel level so I can easily practice at home in the flat (try in combination with a crown royal bag over the top and you've really got a great quiet practice set up that's very free blowing and close
to the natural trumpet sound ) ! so finally I would say (although I haven't tried) I would be very surprised to see a better pocket in the market for that price and as I know from bitter experience....it is critical to play an instrument with a full bell size otherwise you'll cripple your playing with the back
pressure ! p.s. you'll probably need to play with both 1st and 3rd slides out (especially with mutes) to be able to get the tuning correct between octaves and the same notes in different valve combinations (e.g note A 3rd Valve compared to A 1 & 2nd valve combinations), but once set up its pretty good tuning wise.

Oh and since I've been playing on this pocket, my embouchure and overall playing have continued to improve a lot, even to the point that my mrs actually now likes the sound I'm making (LOL) !

I bought the pocket trumpet to practice abroad and felt a little unease when showing it to my teacher who said that it would be hopeless at that price. . But he was evidently surprised at the quality and when using his own mouthpiece produced a lovely low F sharp and right up to top F the tone was lovely, G and above it struggled a bit , So it was a thumbs up. and well worth the out lay plus it easily fits in the hand luggage . all in all a lovely little thing.

Okay, so I ordered this pocket trumpet for a bit of fun. Clearly, at this price point and by it's very nature, the instrument was never going to match up to a Vincent Bach Stradivarius!

That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality and free blowing nature of the instrument. Pitching was pretty good throughout the range and the bell size is generous for a pocket trumpet, with the resultant sound and projection being reasonably good. The valves were pretty slick after a good clean and generous oiling of the pistons and casings (you MUST do this straight out of the box!). I'm sure the valves will be more responsive after a bit of wearing in. The tuning slides are well positioned and operate smoothly after applying a dab of grease. Whilst the bell size is good, don't expect any existing mutes to fit well.

The mouthpiece was a bit disappointing; a low quality generic copy of a 7C, with the interior of the cup being roughly machined and not well polished. The inner edge of the rim was sharper than I'd expect (although some players may like that) . For me, though, the mouthpiece won't be getting used!

The case is lightweight and seems to offer reasonable protection, although the external accessory pocket isn't very generously sized. A minor design rethink might allow some space for a bottle of valve oil to fit inside the case, but I've no real complaints about it.

Holding the instrument for a long time might become uncomfortable, especially if you're used to a standard trumpet, but that's not a deal breaker.

It's fun, and exceeded my expectations for an instrument of this ilk, so it gets 4 stars from me.
