The new VK1 synthetic reed is made of a composite material specially developed by Vandoren. It is the result of 7 years of research.

This composite fibre material does not imitate the structure of cane - it reproduces its essential physical characteristics to obtain the same acoustic behaviour. There are seven Vandoren VK1 strengths available for Alto Saxophone.

All strengths fall between 2.5-3.5 traditional reed strength.

Stable - The material is moisture resistant, rot-proof, does not warp when dried and is saliva resistant.
Durable - The VK performs considerably longer than cane reeds with a high level of consistency.
The VK reed should be stored on a flat surface. We recommend the use of a flat surfaced reed holder (not a standard reed holder).
Easy to use - The reeds can be used directly out of the packaging, without any preparation. The material is washable and can be disinfected with alcohol or with any food compliant disinfectant.
Consistant - Unparalleled consistency resulting in reliable strength, sound, articulation, projection and high note stability

Strength Guide:

There are seven Vandoren VK strengths available. All strengths fall between 2.5-3.5 traditional reed strength. The VK strengths correspond to subdivisions by thirds of the usual half strengths

Strength 30 - Equivalent to a medium traditional blue box 2.5 broken-in reed
Strength 35 - Equivalent to a harder traditional blue box 2.5 broken-in reed
Strength 40 - Equivalent to a softer traditional blue box 3 broken-in reed
Strength 45 - Equivalent to a medium traditional blue box 3 broken-in reed
Strength 50 - Equivalent to a harder traditional blue box 3 broken-in reed
Strength 55 - Equivalent to a softer traditional blue box 3.5 broken-in reed
Strength 60 - Equivalent to a medium traditional blue box 3.5 broken-in reed

Material: The VK reeds comply with the toy standard, chemical part, EU Directive 2009/48/EC, Annex II – Part III. The material is also hypoallergenic.
